Tiger Woods: "I'm not that far off from winning"

  • PGA Tour 2018: Live leaderboard for The Players Championship final round

Webb Simpson claimed victory at The Player Championship, finishing four shots clear of the chasing pack on 18-under par after starting the final round with a seven shot advantage.

Tiger Woods provided more evidence he is ready to return to the winner's circle with his stirring weekend at the Players Championship.

Danny Lee of New Zealand walks off the green on the 17th hole during THE PLAYERS Championship 2018. "I got off to a much better-quality start". Birdies on each of the back-nine par-5s shut down any of his chasers' hopes.

His only big mistake didn't even matter. Outside of an airmailed approach in the water on 18, when victory was all but certain, Simpson was calm once again.

'I've won there eight times and I'd like to get there with one more chance, but I've got to do some work before now and then put together one good event'. "It's hard to stay motivated and keep doing what you're doing".

Justin Thomas posted 68-66 on the weekend with the only blemish on the card to finish T11 and take over the No. 1 spot in the OWGR. Thomas is the 21st player to reach No 1 since the ranking began in 1986, and the seventh American.

If there was any disappointment, Woods said, it was in getting himself to eight-under through 12 but settling for a seven-under round."I mean to be eight-under there through 12, realistically I probably could have got a couple more out of it and got to 10 for the day", he said.

And so he did, shooting a 3-under-par 69 to finish in a six-way tie for 11th place, seven shots behind victor Webb Simpson. He also entered the Regions Tradition, a major on the PGA Tour Champions.

Jordan Spieth who got the honor of pairing with Woods in the final round had a good final round and tournament. At that point, he had closed to within four strokes of Simpson and was tied for second at 14 under par.

But a costly double bogey on the island par-3 17th hole dropped him back down the leaderboard and his 3-under 69 left him tied for 11th.

Horner 'Hopeful' Red Bull Will Challenge Ferrari and Mercedes in Spain
Just from the way the vehicle was feeling this weekend, I think we were more comfortable on the softs. We'll try". "Now from turn 1 to turn 4 it's flat-out with corners in it", he explained.

"I really wanted to do this for my mom", Simpson said after winning The Players on Mother's Day. Not to really mis-hit a shot and only shoot three under par is just weird, because I played much better than that'. It's nice to finally shoot a low one.

Along the way he equaled the course record with his second round 63, and also the 36 and 54-hole PLAYERS scoring records at 15-under 129 and 19-under 197 respectively. When Simpson recorded another bogey, at the 10th, eyes flicked towards Woods.

Brooks Koepka tied the course record on Sunday with a 63 that included a double eagle on the 16th hole.

Simpson did indeed capture the title on Sunday afternoon, winning by four strokes to capture his first victory on the PGA Tour since the Shriners in 2013 and just his second since that win at the Olympic Club six years ago. He had gone to a longer handle that ran up the left side of his arm, and then Tim Clark gave him the missing link. He received a tip from Tim Clark past year at Sawgrass, and he's been working on a putting style similar to Matt Kuchar - putter braced on the left arm but with a claw grip.

"He [Clark] asked me had I ever tried the claw grip, and I said no", Simpson explained earlier in the week.

Martinez Drives In 3, Sox Win
The Red Sox are 10-2 in their last 12 games in Toronto and are 15-7 in their last 22 games versus the Blue Jays overall. John Axford came on to face Martinez in the fifth, and Martinez greeted him with an RBI single, scoring Betts.
