While the recall is significant because of the sheer number of vehicles - the number of cars, SUVs and trucks involved exceed Fiat Chrysler's total USA sales during the last two years - the costs may be less severe because the repair involves a software fix.

While this would be pretty scary, FCA says drivers can overpower cruise control acceleration by using the vehicle's brakes.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV recalled about 4.8 million USA vehicles to fix a software glitch that could lead to cruise control staying on, despite a driver's attempt to deactivate the system. Fiat Chrysler also said the vehicle could be stopped by shifting into neutral and braking.

The company said it is recalling an unspecified number of additional vehicles in Canada, Mexico and other markets, and recalling some Fiat Fremont vehicles built on the same platform of the Dodge Journey.

Nielsen's remarks, which come amid her reported tensions with Trump over immigration, sparked instant condemnation. She stopped short of saying Russian Federation tried to sway the 2016 election in Donald Trump's favor.

The recall includes 15 Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram models from six model years. In an "an unlikely sequence of events", automatic acceleration could occur simultaneously with an electrical network short-circuit and could prevent a driver from being able to cancel cruise control, according to the company.

Fiat Chrysler said vehicles may be put in "park" once stopped, which turns cruise control off.

Fiat Chrysler said it uncovered the issue through tests its engineers had conducted. Also covered are the 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, the 2014-2018 Chrysler 300, the 2017 and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica minivan. The only way to stop at that point would be to brake to a full stop. That happened in a 2017 Dodge Journey, which had been supplied as a rental auto.

Fiat Chrysler shares were down 2 percent in afternoon trading in NY on the recall.

Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin notifying owners July 6.
