  • Trump says he's still looking at June 12 Singapore for Kim summit 'that hasn't changed'

A White House team will travel to Singapore to prepare for a June 12 summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the White House said Saturday.

Moon, who has been a mediator between Trump and Kim, called an emergency meeting in the middle of the night after Trump called off the June summit in a letter to Kim.

In a picture released by the South Korean presidential office, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in embrace after their second meeting on Saturday at the truce village of Panmunjom.

Now that the two sides at least understand what the other wants and are willing to pledge, Moon said he expects "the summit will turn out fine", as US and North Korean working level officials have resumed talks.

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has met his South Korean counterpart just days after Donald Trump cancelled a planned summit with Kim.

At their first meeting on April 27, Moon and Kim agreed to pursue "complete" denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to work toward a formal end to the 1950-1953 Korean War.

The last time two weeks ago that a White House delegation traveled in advance of the planned summit they were stood up by their North Korean counterparts.

"Though North Korea's provocative statements led to [Trump's] decision, I don't think this is the time for us to be pessimistic or discouraged", Choo said, according to Yonhap. Mr. Kim ordered the complex to be finished by April 15, 2019 to mark the birthday of his late grandfather and North Korea founder Kim Il-sung.

Moon will announce the result of his meeting with Kim on Sunday morning local time, the South Korean statement said.

In a tweet Friday, the president said his administration is having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the meeting.

White House officials had been scheduled to travel to Singapore this weekend to plan and review logistics for the anticipated June 12 meeting.

"They shared the opinion that they would meet frequently in the future to make dialogue brisk and pool wisdom and efforts, expressing their stand to make joint efforts for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", KCNA said. "It was a very nice statement they put out".

Trump had also blasted Democrats, saying that they were "rooting against" the U.S.in its negotiations after House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Kim was the victor from Trump's decision. Trump cited "open hostility" from the North as his reason for backing out.

Experts believe that economic pressure brought about by the sanctions has encouraged Kim Jong-un to seek talks.
