Ranking all the Star Wars movies after Solo

  • ‘Solo’ is really struggling at the box office

Last weekend's No. 1 film, Deadpool 2 from 20th Century Fox and Marvel, took second spot this weekend, with a four-day estimate of US$53.5 million. The families that were expected to make this film challenge for the Memorial Day opening weekend record just aren't showing up as much as expected, and now "Solo" might not even finish with one of the top 5 highest openings for this holiday weekend.

The top brass at Disney/Lucasfilm are pondering why Solo: A Star Wars Story didn't fly anywhere near as high as they expected in the U.S. and internationally, including Australia, last weekend.

It's likely few people were bothered that Ron Howard took over as the director mid-shoot with the abrupt departure of Chris Lord and Phil Miller, whose penchant for improvisation evidently didn't sit well with the franchise overlords. The share for the last three Star Wars films was closer to 50 percent; Solo is looking at a much smaller split. For instance, Solo had a $3.3 million opening day in the second biggest market for American blockbusters in the world, almost two-thirds down from The Last Jedi's also anemic $9.7 million opening day.

You get Woody Harrelson in a "Star Wars" movie and this is what you name him?

Saturday returns for the "Star Wars" anthology film registered at just $24.6 million, amounting to a 31 percent drop from Friday's $35.8 million returns. Romantic comedy "How Long Will I Love You" topped the chart after drawing $37 million for its debut weekend.

The Last Jedi, released in December, took $220m. That was just under its $80 million to $85 million projections, and the lowest opening for a "Pirates" movie since the first one, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ($46.6 million).

Ireland's government will be posed to consider legislation that would permit abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Sinn Fein's party leaders from both sides of the border held up a placard at Dublin Castle reading: " The North is next ".

But to reach that range, "Solo" would have needed an overseas boost that it isn't getting at all.

A bigger cause for concern though for Disney is the growing sense of apathy and rejection of Star Wars properties in China. The superhero hit from Disney's Marvel: "Avengers: Infinity War" came second for the May 24-27 period, weeks after its $191 million opening, data at the Box Office Mojo website show.

At the same time, the director James Mangold ("Logan") is pushing ahead with a stand-alone movie focused on Boba Fett, the bounty hunter who made his movie debut in "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980. It also didn't hurt that "Infinity War" practically starred every character from the MCU.

FCA recalls 4.8M vehicles over faulty cruise control
While this would be pretty scary, FCA says drivers can overpower cruise control acceleration by using the vehicle's brakes. Also covered are the 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, the 2014-2018 Chrysler 300, the 2017 and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

If "Solo" was a better movie, this would all be moot.
