The body of a National Guardsman was found in a Maryland river on Tuesday, two days after he went missing while attempting to rescue a woman and her cat during devastating flash floods that swept through Ellicott City.

Howard County police confirmed that the body is that of Eddison "Eddie" Hermond, a 39-year-old National Guard sergeant from Severn, Md.

The Patapsco River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay, rose by 17.8 feet in two hours on Sunday amid a deluge of rainfall.

The latest catastrophic incident came almost two years after a significant flooding was caused due to almost six inches of rain in under two hours time.

Ellicott City certainly got the worst of it. On Sunday (Monday NZT), the community received almost 200mm of rain over a six-hour period, but most of it fell during an intense, three-hour period, Muccilli said. One sight during the flood: a handmade, white flag hung from an upper story of a Main Street building bearing the letters SOS.

Dozens of buildings and hundreds of cars were destroyed.

Many of Ellicott City's residents and business owners are set on rebuilding following Sunday's flash flooding.
