European Union to Ban Single-Use Plastics

  • EU proposes bloc-wide ban on single-use plastics

For products without straight-forward alternatives, the focus is on limiting their use through a national reduction in consumption.

The proposal covers single-use plastic products that range from food containers and cups to personal care items, either prohibiting them, as in the case of straws and cutlery, or reducing their use, as in the case of food containers and beverage cups.

According to the Commission, the rules target 10 single-use plastic products, which together account for 70 per cent of the plastic waste found along European beaches and in its seas.

Collection targets: European Union countries will be obliged to collect 90 per cent of single-use plastic drinks bottles by 2025, for example through deposit refund schemes. This could create new jobs, efficiency savings and prevent an estimated €22 billion in environmental damage by 2030.

Samantha Burgess, Head of Marine Policy at WWF European Policy Office said: "We applaud the EU's political response to the recent public outcry of the impacts marine litter has on the ocean".

The implementation of an EU-wide ban would pave the way for the United Kingdom and its devolved governments to introduce national bans without fear of going against the rules of the Single Market.

The EU is also planning a producer-funded, recycling scheme for plastics, similar to waste electronics or used tyres.

Will be greatly reduced the use of plastic containers, which use a different catering companies for customer service, takeaway plastic lids for cups, plastic bottles, packets and bags, which offer buyers the supermarkets and other shops.

European Commissiom First Vice-President Frans Timmermans gives a joint press with his Vice-President on legislative measures to fight against single-use plastic waste at the EU headquarters in Brussels on May 28, 2018.

The proposals are aimed at outlawing many commonplace plastic items including cotton buds, balloon sticks and drink stirrers. There will also be new rules on labelling sanitary towels, wet wipe and balloons - indicating how they should be disposed of. Should the directive be approved, EU-member states will be given a deadline to adapt to the changes.

New research done by campaign group Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) said that industry interests had monopolised too much of the Commission's time during the build-up to the release of the Plastics Strategy in January.
