As Kim Jong Un arrived in Singapore for a historic summit with USA officials, it became clear that North Korean president Kim Jung Un was not going to miss out on the opportunity to do a spot of sightseeing.

Donald Trump is treated to an early birthday cake whilst in Singapore ahead of the historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

If Trump and Kim are able to determine what the oft-repeated "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" would look like, that would be a positive first step, Wertz added.

CBS News' David Martin reports that Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis "was not surprised". Trump said the U.S. will cut back on its military exercises with South Korea but will not withdraw any American forces.

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday, both staying at luxurious and heavily guarded hotels less than half a mile apart, with Trump at the Shangri-La Hotel and Kim at the St. Regis Hotel.

Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Mr Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday.

This will be the first summit of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting USA president.

Trump, too, has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying additional meetings may be necessary.

But even before then, Trump and Kim could emerge from their meetings on Tuesday declaring a second day of meetings.

President Donald Trump called the leaders of South Korea and Japan Monday ahead of his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearise and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", he said.

Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage, which stressed that the talks with Trump would be focused on forging a relationship that is more in tune with what it called changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear weapons state - its desire for a mechanism to ensure a lasting a durable peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearization. Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.

"I hope that a major agreement on ending hostile relations (between U.S. and North Korea) and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is reached through this time's summit", Moon said.

Mr. Balakrishnan, who received Mr. Kim on Sunday at Changi Airport, said the summit comes after 70 years of suspicion, war and diplomatic failures.

Meanwhile, diplomats from the USA and North Korea met behind closed doors at The Ritz-Carlton hotel, in a bid to narrow their differences ahead of the Trump-Kim summit tomorrow. A senior White House official said Trump was "feeling good" and that the summit was open-ended. That's according to South Korea's presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae at a press briefing in Singapore on Monday. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the plans and insisted on anonymity.
