  • Phil Mickelson reacts to a shot from the fescue on the fifth hole during the third round of the U.S. Open Golf Championship Saturday

Future Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson drew the ire of golf analysts and fans around the world with a choice he made on the 13th hole at Shinnecock Hills.

"I seen the ball go past, he ran and he hit it, and he said, 'I'll wait". He shot 81 in the third round and at 17 over par wasn't going to be a factor on Sunday anyway. I've had multiple times where I have wanted to do that, I just finally did it.

It was a childish display from a five-time major victor celebrating his 48th birthday.

Mickelson, however, said he did not have a momentary lapse and did not do it out of frustration. I wasn't going to have a shot.

Phil Mickelson has sparked controversy at the US Open by striking a moving ball in a breach of golfing etiquette, with Australian Steve Elkington leading the criticism.

The incident on Mickelson's 48th birthday brought to mind a similar episode by John Daly at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

In a day that may have otherwise been remembered for the playing conditions, Mickelson provided a weird and unexpected moment.

Phil Mickelson took his place in the field for the final round of the US Open after discussions with the USGA over whether he should have been disqualified.

One sheriff’s deputy killed, another critical after shooting outside Kansas courthouse
The deputies haven't been identified yet, but we know a male deputy died and a female deputy is in critical condition. Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy Patrick Rohrer was shot and killed in Kansas City, Kansas, June 15, 2018 .

After the putt, commentator Curtis Strange may have summed it up best as Mickelson was walking off the green with a big smile on his face. Taking his two-shot penalty, the extremely unusual incident divided viewers between those who condemned the action, and those who saw the amusing side of it. "It just happens", Johnston said. I tried to hit it as close to the hole as I could to make the next one.

Daly, however, already had a reputation for being unpredictable, whereas Mickelson's reputation as American golf's golden man has been cultivated over nearly three decades of exemplary behaviour on the course.

"He was really wanting information to say "help me understand because I've been hearing stuff in the media that maybe it's a disqualification". I took the two-shot penalty and moved on.

The first two days of the tournament have seen near capacity crowds flood onto the course, about 26,000 on Thursday and more than 29,000 on Friday including spectators, vendor staff and volunteers.
