On-field umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould, and third umpire Richard Kettleborough, all from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, had charged Chandimal after play on Saturday for changing the condition of the ball in breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC Standard Test Match, ODI and T20I Playing Conditions.

For all the action on the field, however, controversy dominated the narrative as Sri Lanka refused to take the field at the start of the day after umpires, concerned over the altered condition of the ball from the previous day, changed the ball and awarded West Indies five penalty runs.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been charged with ball-tampering by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

But an hour has gone and we are still no closer to the start of the third day's play as West Indies trail Sri Lanka by 135 runs with eight wickets in hand.

Earlier, Australia's Cameron Bancroft, Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka (2017) and South Africa's Faf du Plessis (2016) were also held for the same charge. Shanaka's charge means this is the second time in two years that Sri Lanka have found themselves part of a controversy over the condition of the ball.

The umpires had also levelled a penalty of five runs against Sri Lanka 10 minutes before the start of the play on Day 3, and chose to change the ball.

Steve Smith and David Warner were stripped of the captaincy and vice-captaincy respectively and banned from playing worldwide cricket for 12 months.

Play eventually got under way around 11:30 a.m. after Sri Lanka team management consulted with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), and the visitors took the field and continued the match "under protest". Then the team went out to the middle and walked back to the boundary, where arguing with officials didn't relent for another 40 minutes.

The West Indies resumed on day three on 118-2, which was bumped up to 123/2 by the penalty runs.

Sri Lanka was 34/1 at stumps in their second innings, trailing by 13.
