  • DHS Secretary Slams 'Misreporting' of Immigration Practices 'We Don't Have a Policy of Separating Families at Border. Period.'

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said officials will not apologize for enforcing immigration laws that result in the separation of children from their parents.

Nielsen answered by calling the U.S. a "country of compassion" and then pointed out the 10,000 of the 12,000 children in care of Health and Human Services who she said had arrived to the United States as unaccompanied minors. "Illegal actions have and must have consequences".

"No more free passes, no more get out of jail free cards", she said.

Criticism of Trump's "zero tolerance" approach toward border crossings expanded rapidly over the weekend.

But the measure has been harshly denounced by activists, religious leaders, elected Democrats and Republicans alike.

"We do not want to separate children from their parents", Sessions said.

Egypt's Cuper may live to regret Salah omission
Afterward, even Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez conceded that the result might have been different had Salah been on the field. Luis Suarez missed an opportunity to put Uruguay ahead against Egypt as he hit the side netting from close range.

Pressed on why rates of separation are higher now compared to past administrations, Nielsen insisted Trump's hands were tied.

President Trump on Monday tweeted a challenge to Democrats, saying they should back GOP immigration bills aimed at fixing "the world's worst immigration laws".

"I started tweeting out some false claims as I heard them", she said. If they have children accompanying them, the young people are placed in the custody of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, because children can not be held in adult facilities. It now arrests the adults and has diverted 1,995 children into the care of the Department of Homeland Security, sparking an outcry from Democrats and immigrant advocacy groups that oppose the administration.

Congress creates the law, and the White House enforces it, she reminded reporters. "That can not be the answer".

"We do not have the luxury of pretending that all individuals coming to this country as a family unit are in fact a family", she said in a speech to the National Sheriff's Association in New Orleans.

"These children are not entering at points of entry, but unsafe places", Sessions said. He also planned stops at a border patrol station and a port of entry.

Spain ultimately controlled much of the game and can chalk up two of the goals conceded to uncharacteristic individual errors. Spain struggled to contain Portugal's counterattacks, but it showed it remained a solid team despite Lopetegui's absence.

On Friday, United States officials said that close to 2,000 children had been separated from adults in six weeks between mid-April and the end of May. Sessions called the system "generous".

The Office of Refugee Resettlement is the agency under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is responsible for the children. This tweet comes in the midst of nationwide backlash against the separation of immigrant families and the virtual imprisonment of the children in special detention centers.

"It is important to note that these minors are very well taken care of - don't believe the press - they are very well taken care of", Nielsen said. "I'm not familiar with those particular images", she added. "If you smuggle aliens. we will prosecute you".

Nielsen stressed that families seeking asylum at border entries are not breaking the law.

Nielsen echoed these points during her prepared remarks. She framed the issue as anyone who votes against their preferred policy is voting against the "rule of law". "Are you intending to send a message?" She made her choice.

And on Monday, Nielsen herself underscored the stricter policy.

Trump says watchdog report wrong in claiming no FBI bias: Fox interview
Trump said more important than what he called "the agreement" - "I have a good relationship with Kim Jong-un". I want to thank Chairman Kim for taking the first bold step toward a bright new future for his people.

How did the Obama administration handle this issue?

"It is time to fix it", Nielsen said.
