XXXTentacion, the troubled 20-year-old rapper whose bleak, self-released rhymes propelled him to the top of the U.S. chart this year, was shot dead Monday in Florida, authorities said. His condition isn't known at the moment, but TMZ's report notes that the witnesses say "has no pulse".

"The adult male victim has been confirmed as 20 year old Jahseh Onfroy [sic], aka rapper #XXXTentacion", the sheriff's department said later in a Twitter posting. Video from the scene shows him unconscious in the driver's seat of his BMW i8 before police arrive.

The shooting took place in Deerfield Beach, about an hour north of Miami.

According to dispatch audio - the incident was a possible drive-by - dispatchers named several possible getaway vehicles including a black Dodge Journey, Chevy Tahoe and a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Onfroy released his debut XXXTentacion album 17 in August 2017.

His breakout track, "Look at Me!", has over 115 million plays on Soundcloud, an online music streaming service, since it was released in December 2015. His second album ? spent a week at No. 1 in March and featured the hit single "Sad!" which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In response, Spotify recently removed all of XXXTentacion's music from its curated playlists, though that policy was quickly rolled back after others in the industry, including Kendrick Lamar's manager, threatened to retaliate.
