In media interviews, May said her finance minister would set out plans before a government spending review expected next year.

Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, said: "We are clear there will be an increased burden of taxation".

Her claim that a "Brexit dividend" will pay for part of the increase in spending was widely attacked as unrealistic - even by some Conservatives.

And Mrs May has so far refused to be drawn on whether stealth taxes, such as delaying rises in income tax thresholds, and higher borrowing will fund the planned raising of the health budget by £20 billion a year in real terms by 2024.

However the Scottish official raised concerns surrounding the funding of the NHS in Scotland under the SNP.

"It must be a plan that tackles wastes, reduces bureaucracy, and eliminates unacceptable variation, with all these efficiency savings reinvested back into patient care".

They said they wanted their money to be spent, not on subscriptions to European Union membership, but on our vital public services like the NHS.

Five key questions about the Prime Minister's NHS funding announcement answered.

He said Chancellor Philip Hammond would reveal more details in the autumn budget in November.

"Well, I can tell you what I am announcing will mean that in 2023-24, there will be about £600 million a week in cash, more in cash, going into the NHS".

"There is no Brexit dividend and an NHS funding plan that relies on such a source would be literally worthless".

The PM has just announced a grand new plan to invest in the National Health Service.

"The devil is in the detail and the Tories have form of cutting other budgets when they are passing on consequentials which leaves the Scottish Government less than the health consequentials from the UK Government", she said.

Theresa May has today confirmed that taxpayers will have to pay "a bit more" to help fund a £20bn boost to the NHS, but also assured that this would be done in a "fair and balanced" way.

Both are considered essential to the sustainability of the NHS, but the increase announced only applied to front-line NHS services such as hospitals, Global Positioning System and mental health care.

The very idea of a Brexit dividend was quickly pounced on by various economists, political commentators and even Tory MPs on Social media.

While welcoming the £20.5bn-a-year boost, the group says Brexit "poses the biggest risk to our health service in its history" and the public should get a vote on the final deal struck with Brussels.

Councillor Izzi Seecombe, of the Local Government Association, said: "Without essential council services, which help people live healthy lives in their own homes and communities, the NHS can not thrive". But health professionals have argued that the scale of the crisis is much wider and includes other frontline services, particularly in social care.

Spain ultimately controlled much of the game and can chalk up two of the goals conceded to uncharacteristic individual errors. Spain struggled to contain Portugal's counterattacks, but it showed it remained a solid team despite Lopetegui's absence.

"The government says it will make sure the NHS does not come under more pressure as a result of social care pressures - that must mean major public investment in social care - if it is serious about this, the government needs to put its money where its mouth is".
