Denmark 1 Australia 1: Jedinak strikes back after Eriksen rocket

Australia captain Mile Jedinak stepped up and buried the spot-kick for the Socceroos, levelling matters as the teams went into the break with the score at 1-1.

A gut-wrenching 1-2 defeat to France in their Group C opener has left Australia targeting a win against Denmark on Thursday as they seek to qualify from the group stages. "Maybe we got one back", Socceroos defender Mark Milligan told The New Daily afterwards.

The Danes previously beat Peru, while Australia lost to France.

The Danes said before the game that they were keen on getting back to the free-flowing football that has characterised the team.

British PM promises Brexit health service boost
In media interviews, May said her finance minister would set out plans before a government spending review expected next year. Jeremy Hunt , the Health Secretary, said: "We are clear there will be an increased burden of taxation".

Australia, who are playing in their fifth World Cup finals, need a positive result to maintain realistic hopes of qualifying for the last-16 for the second time in their history. "You can ask me those questions 100 times - I know Eriksen because I already saw him a lot in Holland, and I saw him also a lot of times in Tottenham", was all the Dutchman had to say when pressed on his intentions to deal with Denmark's chief threat.

Denmark raced out the blocks with a cracking opening strike through attacking talisman Christian Eriksen as early as the seventh minute. But on the 36th minute Australia equalised via the penalty spot with Aston Villa midfielder sending Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way.

Australia's response was impressive but with just one point from two games the Socceroos' chances of advancing in Russian Federation now appear slim.

The second half started much like the first ended, with Australia looking the more confident side as they kept Denmark's defence busy with a number of half-chances.

H. Clinton: Separating families at border a 'moral crisis'

Both managers made changes in the 68th minute, with Andres Cornelius entering the field for Denmark, while 19-year-old Daniel Arzani was introduced for Australia. The last part of the puzzle is that we must make the difference by scoring one goal more than the opponent.

First, Aaron Mooy fired just over from distance before Tom Rogic and Leckie, Australia's two best performers, were denied by Schmeichel.

Andrew Nabbout suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder in what is likely to be a heartbreaking end to his World Cup campaign.
