  • Evacuations Ordered For Community Along Northwest Iowa River

According to the Associated Press, officials at the scene believed that the floodwaters were a factor in the derailment, but were unsure whether high water pushed cars off the track, damaged the track in some way, or played some other role. Reynolds visited the derailment site Saturday afternoon as part of a tour of areas hit by recent flooding.

Thirty-three oil tanker cars derailed Friday just south of Doon in Lyon County, leaking oil into surrounding floodwaters from the swollen Little Rock River.

(Doon)- Flooding is believed to have been the cause of a train derailment in Lyon county early this (Fri.) morning that has resulted in the evacuation of some residents there.

Railroad crews have also built a 1/8 mile gravel road out to the cars to clean up the mess.

More than 30 tanker cars have derailed in northwestern Iowa and at least some are leaking crude oil into a nearby river.

Crews will then use equipment to separate the oil from the water. The train derailed early Friday near Doon, north of Sioux City. The spill has raised concerns about drinking water downstream.

The Rock River had already carried some oil to Rock Valley by midmorning, said Ken Hessenius with the Iowa Natural Resources Department.

Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that child migrants who came to the border with parents and were held in custody must be released. The two immigration bills under consideration in the House could address the separations, but the outlook for passage is dim.

The train was carrying tar sands oil from Alberta to Stroud, Okla., for ConocoPhillips.

But news of the spill was enough to prompt officials in Rock Valley, a small city about 5 miles (8.05 kilometres) southwest of the derailment, to shut off all the city's drinking water wells.

"Our first major concerns are public water supplies", he said, adding that several towns that draw water from shallow wells near the Rock River have been alerted about possible contamination.

Rail cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed about a mile south of Doon, Iowa, on Friday, June 22, 2018. The spill reached the Rock River, which joins the Big Sioux River before merging into the Missouri River at Sioux City.
