  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

A number of men, in their 60s, say that they voted for Mr Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) because "the violence in [the Kurdish-majority city] Diyarbakir in 2015 was not anywhere near as brutal as the violence the Kurds endured in the 90s".

He was followed by Selahattin Demirtas, of the pro-Kurdish Democratic People's Party (HDP), at 8.1 percent and debutante right-wing IYI (Good) Party's Meral Aksener, at 7.4 percent.

A count of nearly over 95 percent for the parliamentary election also showed that Erdogan's AKP - along with its Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) allies - were well ahead and set for an overall majority. "I hope nobody will damage democracy by casting a shadow on this election and its results to hide their failure". Turnout was at 87 percent for both polls, preliminary data shows.

The voting marked the first time Turkish voters cast their ballots in simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, in line with the constitutional changes approved in a referendum previous year that will transform the country's parliamentary system to an executive presidential one.

They would have preferred to see that opinion remain on the books to influence other lower court judges considering similar cases. Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson has said there is no evidence of hostility against religion in Stutzman's case.

Under the new system, Erdogan will appoint ministers, vice presidents and high-level bureaucrats, issue decrees, prepare the budget and decide on security policies.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) scored below the parliamentary average of 17.67 percent, with just 19 female deputies out of 146, amounting to a mere 13 percent. In a tweet, he said only 37 per cent of ballot boxes had actually been counted, as opposed to the more than almost 90 per cent the state-run agency Anadolu was reporting. In the capital Ankara, municipal trucks loaded with sand blocked a road outside Erdogan's presidential palace.

A majority of 360 votes in parliament are required to take a constitutional change to referendum in the new executive presidential system.

He added that the alliance led by the AKP had won the majority in parliament. They are expected to have 146 and 45 seats in parliament.

Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri later scored a stoppage time victor to send the Swiss second in Group E, behind Brazil. The political back-and-forth has since been addressed by Switzerland head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

"Erdogan "won" reelection in Turkey this weekend only by decimating the opposition through arrests, violence and squashing freedom of the press". "It gives it a lot of power".

The state of emergency has been in place since July 2016 following a failed deadly coup blamed by the government on the movement of Fethullah Gulen, a US-based self-exiled religious leader.

Presidential candidate of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Muharrem Ince holds a potato and an onion as he delivers a speech during a rally in Istanbul, on June 23, 2018. Some of the presidency's new powers are similar to those enjoyed under the state of emergency.

Gulen, a former Erdogan ally who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, denies involvement in the attempted coup, in which at least 240 people were killed.

You Choose Your World Cup Team Of The Week
What's the likelihood? Argentina are 48 per cent, Nigeria 45 per cent and Iceland 7 per cent to make the next stage. Both on six points, they have identical goal totals so a draw would mean top spot going to the best-behaved team .

"The opposition will not be a nuisance anymore with the new presidential system", said another Erdogan supporter, retired sailor Engin Ozmen, 60.
