  • Colbert Fallon O'Brien 'collude' on response to Trump attacks

A day after President Donald Trump ripped on late night talk show hosts from a rally in South Carolina, Charleston-native Stephen Colbert fired back in a classic comic way.

In a taped segment that opened both Stephen Colbert's The Late Show and Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Colbert and Fallon were seen responding to his recent slights. Fallon was criticized by liberals for playfully ruffling Trump's hair, a moment he publicly said he regretted, causing Trump to tweet the insult "be a man", to the late show host. He also described the comedians, including Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, as "lowlifes", "lost souls" and "terrible". Colbert then responds with, "Hey lost soul!" Heard he said we're all no talent, low life, lost souls, ' Fallon said.

O'Brien cautions the hosts to be civil. "If we're not careful, this thing could start to get ugly", he says.

'Honestly are these people amusing?

Fallon responded, "What are you up to?" "It's pretty much the only thing I have in common with National Football League players", Fallon said, referencing Trump's attacks on the National Football League and its players last season.

Of course, it's far too late for that, as they are now clearly in Trump's cross-hairs.

Trump said he recently had to tell Fallon to "be a man" and not apologize for messing up Trump's hair during a 2016 appearance. "So Melania, if you're watching, I don't think your anti-bullying campaign is working".

"He went after Jimmy Fallon". He also said he had made a donation to an organisation that provides education and legal services to refugees in Trump's name. He went after Jimmy Kimmel.

Under the Obama administration, such families were usually ordered back to their home country but not charged as a criminal. But now, with the executive order , the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will take custody of the entire family.

The conversation ends with Colbert and Fallon confirming a lunch date.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS. Colbert asked, folding his ear in on itself and staring confidently into the camera.

On Colbert's show, the short video opened with Colbert writing a joke and congratulating himself - "Great monologue!" - before answering a video call from Fallon. Instead, he commented on Trump saying people should "toot their own horns".

"Well, guys, give him time".
