Uruguay secured top spot in Group A at the 2018 World Cup as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani were on target to lead them to a 3-0 win over Russian Federation.

Igor Smolnikov received his marching orders on 36 minutes for two bookable offences to take the fight out of Sbornaya, who conceded a late third goal to Edinson Cavani.

Uruguay waited for 12 long years before the national team could celebrate goals from Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in the same match at a World Cup.

Russian Federation manager Stanislav Cherchesov was magnanimous in defeat after his side were hammered 3-0 by Uruguay in their final FIFA World Cup Group A match on Monday.

What was the hand gesture made by the Swiss goal scorers?
Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri later scored a stoppage time victor to send the Swiss second in Group E, behind Brazil. The political back-and-forth has since been addressed by Switzerland head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

At Volgograd, the oldest person to play in a World Cup match gave up a pair of goals Monday, as Saudi Arabia beat Egypt 2-1 in the other Group A match between teams that had already been eliminated.

Much of the pre-match focus of this game has been on whether we should be suspicious of Russia's stunning start to the competition.

A corner was headed clear as far as Diego Laxalt, whose effort on goal was deflected off the inside shin of Cheryshev and curled inside the near post.

With striker Fedor Smolov added to the mix as a replacement for Alexei Miranchuk, Russia battled for a way back into the game in sweltering heat, but as Uruguay skipper Diego Godin marshalled his defensive troops, chances were few and far between.

Cherchesov also says that Russian football players rode roughshod over the beginning of such hard matches as the one against Uruguay was. As a team we're thinking about what's best for the squad as that's what's most important.

The Russian team took the second place in Group A, gaining six points, and the match of the 1/8 finals will be held in Luzhniki Stadium.

Salem Aldawsari scored with nearly the last kick, shooting from a tight angle inside the Egypt penalty area and poking the ball past El Hadary.

Russia's Ilya Kutepov leaves the pitch after the group A match between Uruguay and Russia at the 2018 soccer World Cup at the Samara Arena in Samara, Russia, Monday, June 25, 2018. The decision was confirmed after a video review. Tomorrow's match will decide on the victor of their Group A, which also enrolls the teams from Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Because Russia has the advantage in goal differential, it would win the group with a draw.
