  • Tyler Hilinski's Parents Say QB Had CTE, Brain of 65-Year-Old at Time of Death

The parents of the Washington State quarterback, who shot himself in the head with a.223 caliber rifle in his apartment on January 16, revealed Tuesday in an interview with NBC's "Today" that Hilinski had CTE, a degenerative brain condition.

During an appearance on NBC's Today show, Hilinski's parents revealed Stage 1 chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) had ravaged their son's brain and likely played a role in his death. A study published past year in the Journal of the American Medical Association found CTE in the brains of 99 percent of NFL players and 91 percent of college football players who were examined.

"It was a shock to get those results and find out that he had it, and to realize that this sport that he loved may have contributed to that diagnosis", said Kym Hilinski, Tyler's mother.

We may never know the reason why Ty did what he did but we know how we can continue to make him happy even when he's not here.

"The medical examiner said he had the brain of a 65-year-old", Mr Hilinski added.

A 2015 Mayo Clinic study analyzing the donated brains of athletes who played contact sports in high school found CTE in one-third, compared to none in the non-athlete population. The interview comes alongside the debut of a new Sports Illustrated documentary about the family's search for answers.
