  • Colombia's players attend a training session in Kazan on June 25 ahead of their Russia 2018 World Cup Group H match against Senegal

Colombia secure their passage to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Senegal, who miss out on qualification to Japan on the fair-play rule.

If Japan and Senegal both win, Colombia will be eliminated and who tops the group will be decided on goal difference and then goals scored.

Senegal on Thursday became the final team to be eliminated from the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, and it happened in the most gut-wrenching fashion imaginable. Japan and Senegal finished tied on almost every tiebreaker, so things had to be decided based on FIFA Fair Play points.

Colombia, which played in the quarterfinals four years ago in Brazil, finished atop its group and is the fourth South American team to advance.

Germany boss Joachim Low admits side deserved to go out
But Germany came out with an uninspired effort against South Korea , and its failure came in especially gut-wrenching fashion. For those expecting to see an even more convincing result against South Korea , sadly not.

Such was the stranglehold Senegal had in the first half, Colombia failed to have a single touch of the ball in the opposition box as the sides went in scoreless at the break.

With Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria all having been knocked out, Senegal were the last remaining African nation at the 2018 World Cup.

Here are five things we learned on a historic day in World Cup football.

Senegal continued to contain the South Americans as news filtered through to the stadium in the 60th minute that Poland had taken the lead against Japan in the other Group H game meaning that a draw would suffice for Colombia.

Endless turmoil leaves Messi's Argentina in disarray at World Cup
Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas played down the praises heaped on the performances of Cristiano Ronaldo at the world cup so far. Fabregas wanted to let people know that Ronaldo's goals have come via situations that are easier to score from.

David Ospina, Cristian Zapata, Yerry Mina, Davinson Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez, James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, Carlos Bacca and Radamel Falcao are some of the world class players that comprises the Colombian squad. But Japan were successful in keeping the 26-year-old more or less quiet after that and Cisse admitted that the Asian side deserved to win, even if they were twice behind.

The loss of Rodriguez, who goes by his first name, was a blow to the Colombians, who were already without Abel Aguilar because of an adductor injury that caused him to be stretched off the field against Poland.

Rodriguez did not start Colombia's clash with Japan earlier in the group stage.

Sanchez thwarted Senegal's star man again on 26 minutes after Mane had skilfully turned away from Mina. Colombia's talent won out in the end, however.
