Spain appoint ex-Barcelona coach Luis Enrique as manager

Fernando Hierro, who led Spain at the 2018 World Cup, has stepped down as coach and will not return to his former role as sporting director.

Hierro took over from Julen Lopetegui on a temporary basis, two days before Spain's first World Cup game.However The 2010 World Cup winners were knocked out of this year's tournament in the Round of 16.

Hierro, 50, has made a decision to "seek new horizons", according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

"We liked his commitment and he has turned down better paid jobs to coach the Spanish national team".

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have scheduled a news conference on Monday to announce changes to the organisation's structure.

Luis Enrique has been on a sabbatical since leaving Barcelona in May 2017 and was a reported target of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in April.

Enrique, 48, will replace Lopetegui, who was sacked by Rubiales when the coach announced he had signed to take over at Real Madrid.

Hierro had previously said he accepted responsibility for the team's failure to advance any further in the World Cup.

Earlier on Monday, Jose Francisco Molina, a former goalkeeper for Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna with nine caps for Spain, was appointed as the federation's sporting director.
