  • Four Of The Boys Trapped In Thai Cave Rescued

The rescue of the first four boys - whose soccer team is known as the Wild Boars - brought cheers and optimism on Sunday, bolstering hopes that more of the boys can survive a complicated and hours-long process that includes the use of multiple divers and a system of air tanks stashed along the escape route.

Eight of the 12 boys trapped in a flooded and labyrinth cave system in far northern Thailand are safe and recuperating in a hospital after another four were brought out by divers on the second day of a high-stakes rescue operation, a top official said.

The rescue operation was started on Sunday as more rain is expected this week, which would make it harder to rescue the boys.

Narongsak said that the "same multinational team" that went into the cave on Sunday to retrieve the first four boys was deployed on Monday.

Like much of the world, Patrick Decker has been engrossed in the saga of 12 boys trapped with their soccer coach in a flooded cave in northern Thailand. Each boy was accompanied by two divers in an arduous journey through a mile of underwater tunnels.

Three divers have been escorting the children, while the remainder are positioned along the risky first kilometre stretch.

Eight now free: Four more boys rescued from flooded Thailand cave
Witnesses say the boys freed Monday were treated at a make-shift hospital at the site, before being taken to a local hospital. The same divers who managed to rescue the first group of four boys on Sunday were involved in the second operation.

Four boys were rescued Sunday before the effort was put on hold so the cave could be restocked with oxygen tanks and other essentials.

Thirteen divers and five Thai Navy SEALs are involved in the operation, in which the trapped team must walk or wade through muddy areas of the winding cave and rising waters.

A diving crew is now making the treacherous journey to save the group of 13 boys aged 11-16 and their football coach who are trapped by flooded tunnels.

The four rescued boys are in hospital and will be kept in an isolation unit for 1-2 days.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was scheduled to visit the site later Monday. Doctors were being cautious because of the infection risk and were isolating the boys in the hospital.

Thai officials have confirmed that they are prioritising the weaker boys first, in order to ensure they get quick treatment.

"This morning they said they are hungry, and they wanted Phad Kra Pao", he said.

The group went into the Tham Luang cave more than two weeks ago. Visitors would need to wear sanitized clothes and stay two meters away from the children.

The rescued boys were airlifted to the Chiagrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Chiang Rai after initial treatment at a field hospital near the caves, and the four boys rescued Sunday were said to be "in good condition".

Monday's operation began at 11 a.m. and took nine hours, two fewer than Sunday, with rescuers helped by the experience they've accumulated, Narongsak told a news conference punctuated with rounds of applause.

Only one boy has been named by local media as being part of the first group that was rescued. It was unclear who was inside the ambulance or the helicopter. Onlookers were seen watching and cheering as they drove by.

The rescue team are facing a race against time to get the remaining boys out before oxygen levels in the cave get even lower and before even more rain falls during the monsoon season, which lasts until October. Thai navy SEALs are leading the effort, but more than 90 rescue workers from around the world have been laboring in and around the dark, twisting cave.
