Hurricane Chris keeps northeast track, expected to hit parts of Canada

The BWS said Chris was “unlikely to have significant impact on the island, with moderate to strong winds and swells of up to 9ft expected as it passes”. It is forecast to strengthen as it meanders off the Carolinas coast on Tuesday.

The second hurricane of the 2018 season has quickly strengthened into a Category 2 storm that is moving away from the USA but making a bee-line toward Canada and, eventually, Iceland.

The US National Hurricane Centre yesterday said the Chris was headed towards the northeast at about 2mph, with the storm forecast to pick up speed. Beryl will continue to move northward and then turn on a more northeasterly course later today and Thursday. It could graze Newfoundland later in the week. Its winds will likely slow down back to storm status, according to current data from the NHC.

Storm Chris has now been upgraded to a hurricane and is set to hit the United Kingdom with gales and damper weather.

A yellow weather warning is in place for London and South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales and the West Midlands, meaning there is "the potential for heavy and slow-moving thundery downpours in places". If anything, conditions will worsen in the coming days as rip currents become a significant concern.

A hurricane across the Atlantic may "influence" Britain's hot weather possibly bringing wind and rain next week. "It looks like a really fun day".

"We're excited to have a storm this early in our season, for more advanced surfers definitely", Pete Cove, general manager of the East Coast Surf School, told Canadian broadcaster CBC. It adds to the hype.
