President Donald Trump said during a Sunday interview with CBS News anchor Jeff Glor that the European Union is a foe.

President Trump had told CBS News, "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade".

Asked in an interview at his Turnberry golf resort who was his biggest foe globally, Mr Trump replied: "I think we have a lot of foes".

He also said Russian Federation "is a foe in certain respects" and that China "is a foe economically". But simply because he considers these actors to be a "foe" does not necessarily mean that they are bad, he clarified. It doesn't mean anything. "It means they are competitive", he said.

A trade war is also under way with China after the USA implemented tariffs for what it called unfair trade practices by Beijing.

Trump's statement follows a combative North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and ongoing tensions with foreign nations over trade.

President Trump included the European Union when rattling off a list of the "biggest foes" of the United States throughout the world.

As for the EU, Trump doubled down on his calls for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members to contribute more money.

"You know I love those countries".

"I respect the leaders of those countries", he said.

"Nevertheless, Germany owes vast sums of money to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany", Trump said in a two-tweet statement after meeting with Merkel for the first time in March 2017.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Theresa May told the BBC that Trump told her to sue the European Union. Where they're going to be paying Russian Federation billions and billions of dollars a year for energy, and I say that's not good, that's not fair.

"I go in with low expectations", Trump told CBS.

Trump repeated his previous assertion that the European Union has "really taken advantage of us on trade". There's a lot of anger.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, which guides the European Union, responded on Twitter with a quip: "America and the EU are best friends. Because it's like, what, are they waving a white flag?"
