  • Polar bear attacks cruise ship employee on Arctic island

A polar bear that bit a cruise ship worker on the head has been shot dead on the Svalbard archipelago.

It happened on the northernmost island of Svalbard archipelago, a region between mainland Norway and the North Pole known for polar bears and ice caps.

The injured person was immediately provided with medical care and flown to a hospital with a rescue helicopter.

The polar bear was shot dead by another employee as it attacked their colleague.

Demare silences detractors with victory on stage 18
A member of the Gendarme caused the two men to stop abruptly and crash before he then pulled Chris Froome off his bicycle. Sky sporting director Nicolas Portal, a former rider with the team, appealed to fans to use common sense.

According to Danielsen, it is unknown who shot and killed the polar bear or if the injured person is a part of the tourist group or the crew on the ship.

This is not the first time people are attacked by polar bears on Svalbard.

However, animal lovers including comedian Ricky Gervais have reacted furiously on social media after the German cruise company which organised the trip justified the decision to shoot the bear dead by describing it as "an act of self-defence".

The Associated Press reports that arctic tourism in the region has risen sharply in the last few years. His condition has not been made available, but the spokeswoman said he was "responsive".

Facebook Suspends Personal Account Of Sandy Hook Hoax Theorist Alex Jones
The suspension does not stop other page administrators from posting to his personal page or the page of Infowars . While that video didn't prompt Facebook to action, apparently bringing up the controversy did.

She said all cruise ships traveling in the northern region are obliged to have polar bear guards on board. "On the contrary", the statement explains, "polar bears are only observed from aboard ships, from a safe distance".

The line goes on to say that they, "very much regret this incident" as they are "very aware of [our] responsibility when travelling in environmentally-sensitive areas and respect all nature and wildlife".

Given that the current "population status" of polar bears is listed as "vulnerable" due to their decreasing number, it is perhaps not surprising that the company has come under intense fire for how the incident played out.

The 3,000 or so polar bears living on the main island of the Svalbard archipelago outnumber humans, according to the Norwegian government.
