19 states vow to sue over proposed fuel efficiency rollbacks

"The administration's proposal to weaken these rules will cause the American people to breathe dirtier air and pay higher prices at the pump", the statement said. California and 16 other states filed suit over the fuel efficiency standards in May, anticipating the new regulation.

Opponents are concerned about the rollback's effects on air quality.

The Trump administration today formally proposed weakening Obama-era clean auto rules and pre-empting states from setting tougher standards. It's likely to set up a lengthy legal battle between California and the Trump administration.

Thirteen states, plus Washington, DC, have adopted California's standards.

In the years before California's extremely strict clean air rules, there were smog-filled skies that were fairly common.

The administration is seeking comments on the plan. "Maine wants cleaner cars nationwide because upwind pollution matters so much to us, so we've done our part by using the best clean vehicle standards available".

Transport has become the largest sector source of greenhouse gas emissions in the USA, as cheap fuel has encouraged Americans to buy larger vehicles such as SUVs. Many independent experts are skeptical of these claims.

The greatest increase in greenhouse gas emissions would happen in the 2030s because electric cars will grow significantly by the 2040s, the Energy Innovation analysis found. The impact of freezing those targets for six years, as the administration favors, would be enormous. The firm projects the policy would cost the US economy $457 billion and cause 13,000 deaths by 2050, as air quality suffers.

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed a set of new fuel economy and emissions standards on August 2, estimated to result in 12,700 fewer traffic deaths, make passenger cars more affordable, and give automakers more freedom to create cars based on consumer preference rather than government mandate.

What were the Obama administration guidelines?

Under the Trump administration's proposal, fuel economy will continue to increase through 2020. That would price many buyers out of the new-vehicle market, forcing them to drive older, less-safe vehicles that pollute more, the administration says.

Federal judge blocks release of 3-D printable gun designs
That's if it takes off, which some say is unlikely given the cost of 3D printers and the lack of durability of the plastic guns. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is " looking into " the idea, declaring it " doesn't seem to make much sense! ".

The argument may prove a tough sell in court, where attorneys for states and environmental groups will come armed with a wealth of data undermining it.

But administration officials argued easing requirements that cars be more fuel efficient should make them both cheaper and safer, getting vehicles with the latest safety developments in the hands of consumers. "They have failed before". They said the average cost of a new automobile is $35,000 and attributed part of that to increasing fuel standards.

At a May meeting in the White House, auto firms appealed to Trump to tap the brakes on the administration's aggressive rollback plan. "The data and science does not back up what they are trying to do, which is to eviscerate these California standards".

Those negotiations have gone nowhere.

"This has to be absolutely one of the most harmful and dumbest actions that the EPA has taken", said Healey of MA, one of the attorneys general from 19 states and the District of Columbia objecting to the change.

"I'm sure you've all heard the big news that we're going to work on the CAFE standards, so you can make cars in America again", Trumptold a crowd in Detroit on March 15, 2017. And when they fail they are prohibitively expensive to fix and often require someone akin to a rocket scientist to troubleshoot.

Hungarian GP: Lewis Hamilton enjoys a victory against the odds
Bottas, suffering a loss of downforce when the Ferrari swung in front of him, had nowhere to go and contact was inevitable. Vettel will certainly be hoping so. "So I'm quite confident with what's in the pipeline".

At the same time, it plans to block California from putting its own mileage standards into place.
