The Thomas Fire, which tore across Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, leaving in its wake one person dead and more than 1,000 structures destroyed, raced up the list a year ago to become the largest wildfire ever recorded in California. The state's firefighting agency said it's had no complications accessing water, while fire experts said the state's hot, dry and windy conditions are to blame for the infernos, not any water policy. The tweets puzzled not only the state officials, but also scientists, who said that Trump not only failed to address human-caused climate change but also seemed to confuse the completely separate issues of fire protection and water management.

Its intensity was so great at one point, that it generated a tornado-like fire storm - as well as its own weather system.

The Mendocino Complex Fire has scorched a little more than 443 square miles, an area larger than the city of San Diego and nearly as large as Los Angeles, and it could still grow.

"It is extremely fast, extremely aggressive, extremely unsafe", McLean continued. ZACA FIRE (Santa Barbara County), July 2007 Acres burned: Structures destroyed: Deaths: 7.

Typically, temperatures dip and humidity rises overnight, giving fire crews a window to slow down the spread of the wildfires.

The largest ever until Monday had been the Thomas Fire in December 2017. Another large fire that is still now uncontained, the Carr Fire, is climbing the list at number 12. This puts them at the number two spot on the list of largest wildfires in state history.

Although the Mendocino Complex Fire is record-setting for California, it does seem to be following a trend of increasingly massive and unsafe fires.

The president's comment comes after he said Sunday that too much water from the northern part of the state is being wasted by flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

"The soldiers will be outfitted with wildland fire Personal Protective Equipment and all of the gear they will need to serve as wildland firefighters", U.S. Northern Command said in a statement.

"California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized", Trump wrote on Twitter.

What are firefighters doing to stop the Mendocino Complex Fire?

"Let's be clear: It's our changing climate that is leading to more severe and destructive fires", said Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler.

The fire has destroyed dozens of homes and other buildings, and more than 11,000 structures remained threatened, the department said.

"Unfortunately, they're not going to get a break anytime soon", said Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

More than 3,900 firefighters are working to contain the Mendocino Complex Fire, with more than 60 fire crews and 441 fire engines, according to Cal Fire. Jerry Brown told reporters Saturday.
