Between April 2016 and the end of March previous year, 52 people were killed per day in South Africa.

As part of its presentation, the SAPS revealed the 30 worst precincts for murder, with the Western Cape having the most stations recorded - however, Gauteng was not far behind.

The release of the crime statistics for the 2017-2018 period was a sobering affair, during which Police Minister Bheki Cele likened the situation to that of a "war zone".

The total number of murders for the country has increased from 19,016 to 20,336.
