Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz dies in London

The three-time former first lady was diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma in August a year ago and had been in London since, where she underwent multiple surgeries and at least five chemotherapy sessions.

Referring to her mother, Maryam Nawaz had said that she had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when "most men did not".

But she was not sworn in as she was already overseas for cancer treatment.

The government has made a decision to free Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar on parole so that they can attend the final rites of the former first lady on Friday.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Kulsoom Nawaz.

ISLAMABAD: The government has released former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar on parole to attend the funeral of Pakistan's former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

Ms Nawaz is the granddaughter of the famous wrestler Gama Pehlwan, or the Great Gama, on her maternal side.

Born into a Kashmiri family in Punjab, she graduated from Forman Christian College University.

Over the last 30 years, she had stood by her husband and advised him on various government affairs. She contested for the NA-120 seat despite her failing health and secured 59,413 votes and defeated Yasmin Rashid of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI). He said in case the family decides to bury her in Pakistan, the repatriation process may take two or three days.

Begum Kulsoom served as first lady of Pakistan in her husband's three non-consecutive terms as prime minister from 1990-1993, 1997-1999 and 2013-2017. On June 15, she was placed on a ventilator after suffering a cardiac arrest. There was speculation that she would become the party's president to avoid Shehbaz Sharif's elevation to the post.

She was elected from Lahore's NA-120 constituency in a by-election after her husband was disqualified from the seat by the Supreme Court previous year but left for Britain even before she could start campaigning.

Sharif was ousted from the premiership a month before his wife's diagnosis.

She got engaged to Mian Nawaz Sharif during her Masters programme. According to some party leaders, she also occasionally wrote Mr Sharif's speeches. "They had to leave her behind, I don't know what they'll be going through right now".

She showed up at the Election Commission to file her nomination papers, but then suddenly departed for London on the very day she was to reappear at the commission to respond to objections raised on her candidature by rivals. But it soon transpired that she had been diagnosed with lymphoma.

But she could never return to the country to take her oath as a member of parliament.
