Russian Federation was set to begin its largest military exercise since the Cold War on Tuesday, involving more than 300,000 military personnel, including forces from neighbouring China and Mongolia.

The week-long war games dubbed "Vostok-2018" (East-2018), "have kicked off" in far eastern Russian Federation and on the Pacific Ocean, the defense ministry said in a statement.

With 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 aircraft and 80 ships, the Vostok 2018 exercises will be even bigger than the mock battles fought during the Cold War.

Compared to that, China's participation seems minuscule with only 3,200 troops and 30 aircraft.

Jack Watling, a research individual practicing in land warfare at London's Royal United Services Institute a defense think tank elucidated Vostok 2018 as an affirmation of force to some expanse.

"We have agreed to conduct such exercises on a regular basis", Shoigu said.

Dmitri Trenin, former Russian army colonel and director of the Carnegie Moscow Center think tank, opined that Russia is sending a strong message through Vostok 2018: "With its Vostok 2018 exercise Russia sends a message that it regards the USA as a potential enemy and China as a potential ally".

The military arranged several artillery batteries stocked with mid to long-range S-300, S-400, Tor and Buk missiles, the likes of which Moscow has recently sold to Syria and Iran despite protests from the U.S. and Israel.

Tensions have been heightened between Russian Federation and the West in the wake of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Syria and the Novichok attack in Salisbury.

"It fits into a pattern we have seen over some time - a more assertive Russian Federation significantly increasing its defense budget and its military presence", Dylan White, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesman, told reporters in late August.

Russian Federation has begun the world's largest military drills, involving 300,000 soldiers.

This activity was part of the first stage of the exercise, which runs until September 17, the ministry said in a statement.

Russian Federation has denied the drills are a cause for worry.

Russian officials have said that the war games are not meant as a threat to any particular country but are justified by what Putin's spokesman described on August 28 as a hostile global environment.

Putin, who is armed forces commander-in-chief, is expected to observe the exercises this week alongside Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who is overseeing them.

Referring to her mother, Maryam Nawaz had said that she had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when "most men did not". There was speculation that she would become the party's president to avoid Shehbaz Sharif's elevation to the post.

"The war games have laid a foundation for China and Russian Federation to enhance cooperation on worldwide arena and will lift the combat proficiency of both sides", he said. It also "signifies that the political strategic trust and military cooperation between China and Russian Federation has reached a historic high".
