U.S. to impose ‘severe’ sanctions on Russian Federation over spy poisoning

Two men accused by London of poisoning former spy Sergei Skripal told Russian media on Thursday they visited the British city of Salisbury for tourist purposes and denied having anything to do with the murder attempt.

Peskov's comments come a day after the two men appeared in an interview on Kremlin-funded RT television station to proclaim their innocence.

"What were you doing there?"

Petrov and Boshirov told RT they were visiting the "wonderful town" of Salisbury, England, to see its famous cathedral. For tourists coming from Russian Federation to the United Kingdom, the delights of Salisbury's ancient cathedral, its 123-metre tall spire, 14th century working clock and well-preserved Magna Carta are, at best, a side-trip on the way to Stonehenge.

The two men, both wearing blue jumpers, said they ran a sports nutrition business and that their lives had become a nightmare since London charged them with attempted murder after what they said was an innocent three-day trip to Britain.

Britain said the two suspects were Russian military intelligence (GRU) officers nearly certainly acting on orders from high up in the Russian state.

And it led to mixed signals from officials in SC , whose governor had canceled mandatory evacuation for several coastal counties. Rainfall totals from Hurricane Florence will top 20 inches in some areas, the National Weather Service says.

The Russian prime suspects in the Salisbury nerve agent attack have disappeared following their only interview about the case and appear to have disconnected their mobile phones.

The Center for European Reform tweeted that its director of foreign policy, Ian Bond, told the BBC that the interview could have meant to "cause confusion, put smoke out there to obscure the battlefield". They denied the allegation and Russian Federation refused to extradite them.

"They said if they found the pictures they would send them to me but I am still waiting".

The pair complained their lives had become a "nightmare" and they could no longer watch the news and urged journalists to leave them alone.

"From the very start we planned to go to London and, put bluntly, cut loose and have some fun", he said in the interview which was pre-recorded on Wednesday and broadcast on Thursday.

British officials have called this explanation "risible", saying it is "clear" the men are Russian intelligence officers, according to the Guardian. The U.K. alleges that the men worked for GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency.

Florence Strengthens Into Hurricane, Continues Moving Towards East Coast
Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday as communities up and down the East Coast monitor Tropical Storm Florence . The governor urged residents to begin making their preparations as the entire SC coast remains in the cone of uncertainty.

British security services had named the men as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, but said these were likely to be aliases.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Friday that Russian authorities will consider Britain's request to interrogate them if it comes.

That was when a former Russian double agent and his daughter were stricken by a military-grade nerve agent, Novichok, that almost killed them.

Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov do not deny the British claims that they travelled from London to Salisbury twice.

When asked by RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan whether they had a counterfeit bottle of designer perfume, which the police said contained the nerve agent, Borishov replied: "Is it silly for decent lads to have women's perfume?"

Both men looked composed during the interview, but Boshirov said, "We fear for our lives". "I'll show you the spire!"

Florence could hit with punch not seen in more than 60 years
A NY task force, made up of NYPD and FDNY members, is sending 82 people and six canines to North Carolina to help. That means high rainfall totals and consequent inland flooding could become a huge concern.

The network broadcast the interview with the suspects in the Novichok poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the United Kingdom on Thursday, even as it faces multiple ongoing investigations by media regulator Ofcom into its coverage of the attack in March.
